1. I like charcoal-grilled taste... why would I switch?

Cooking with the FlameDisk® provides a delicious flame-grilled taste. Juices from your meat drip down on to the lid of the FlameDisk®, creating a great, smoky, flame-grilled flavor as your food is cooking.

The questions to ask yourself

  • Do you want to save time? No waiting for charcoal briquets to ignite and get up to temperature, and no waiting for briquets to burn out and cool down at the end.
  • Do you want less hassle and effort? No lugging charcoal around and cleaning up dirty ash/soot. No need for smelly charcoal starting fluid or bulky starting devices.
  • Do you want to use convenient, renewable fuel (solidified ethanol)? Our ethanol comes from corn, a renewable resource.

If you answered yes, we recommend the FlameDisk®, the charcoal alternative!

2. Will this product give my food a strange flavor?

No! The FlameDisk® uses ethanol. When ethanol burns it releases mostly heat, carbon dioxide (the gas we exhale with each breath) and water vapor. The smoky, flame-grilled flavor resulting from meat juices dripping onto the lid of the FlameDisk® is second to none. Grill with confidence!

3. Is ethanol safe to use?

FlameDisk® uses solidified ethanol as the main fuel ingredient. Our ethanol comes from corn, a renewable resource. FlameDisk® starts immediately (ready to use 4 minutes after lighting) and provides a consistent and reliable flame (as with all grilling, flare-ups may occur when grease drips down.) FlameDisk® cools quickly when the fuel is used up (cool to the touch in 10 minutes).

Please note that the fuel in the FlameDisk® is flammable. In addition, you should never consume any components of the FlameDisk® and eye irritation may occur if fuel contacts eyes. We urge you to read all warnings and instructions before use.

4. Is it ethanol like gas for my car?

The ethanol in FlameDisk® is not produced from petroleum/fossil fuels; it is produced from corn, a renewable resource. Ethanol is an excellent source of energy and heat. Please read and follow all warnings and instructions before use.

5. Is this product recyclable?

The FlameDisk® container is made of aluminum which can be disposed of in your trash or recycled according to local requirements for recycling of aluminum. It may only be recycled in communities where aluminum products may be recycled. Before disposing of FlameDisk®, burn all fuel completely and then let cool an additional 10 minutes before handling. The peel-off film cover of the FlameDisk® should be placed in your regular garbage. The carton may be recycled in communities where printed paperboard is accepted for recycling. Please check your community recycling policies.

6. The flames sometimes touch my food. Is that okay?

Yes, the smoky, flame-grilled flavor from the FlameDisk® is awesome!

7. Do I have to “re-learn” how to grill?

No, the FlameDisk® cooks food at about the same rate and temperature as a charcoal. For example, if you typically cook your burgers five minutes on each side with charcoal, it won’t be much different with the FlameDisk®. The most significant difference is that the FlameDisk® works best when your grill lid is not used.

8. Can I reuse the FlameDisk®?

No. The FlameDisk® is a single use product.

9. Is the FlameDisk® refillable?

No. The FlameDisk® is not refillable.

10. What happens if the fire goes out prematurely due to wind?

Just shield your grill from wind and carefully relight the FlameDisk®.

Do not relight FlameDisk® after it has been intentionally extinguished. FlameDisk® is a non-refillable single use product.

Please note, the flame may be hard to see. Assume fuel is lit, even if you do not see flames.

11. What should I use to light the FlameDisk®?

The FlameDisk® should be lit using a multi-purpose lighter such as our BIC® Multi-Purpose Lighter. You can also use a long match.

12. What if I want to cook lots of food?

You have at least two options:

If you are using a smaller grill, use one FlameDisk® to cook multiple “rounds” of food. Since the FlameDisk® will burn for about 35-45 minutes, you can cook several “rounds” of burgers with one FlameDisk®. And, you can also use another FlameDisk® after the first one is done.

To cook more food using a larger grill with a greater grilling surface, just place two FlameDisks side by side in your grill ... that works great too.

13. How long can I store a FlameDisk® before I use it?

We have developed the FlameDisk® packaging to maintain the integrity of the fuel for at least two years as long as the film cover is not removed until you are ready to light the FlameDisk®.

Keep and store away from children and away from flame, sparks and heat. FlameDisk® may take longer to light if stored at colder temperatures (below 50˚F).

Please also note that the fuel in the FlameDisk® is flammable and we urge you to read all warnings and instructions before use.

14. Can I use FlameDisk® inside my house?

No, the FlameDisk® is for outdoor use only.

15. Can I use FlameDisk® in my propane/gas grill?

No, FlameDisk® is a charcoal alternative. Do not use in a propane/gas grill.

16. Are there any tips or tricks to using this product?

For complete product warnings and instructions, visit the Warnings & Instructions page. Here are a few tips:

  • The fuel in the FlameDisk® requires air to work. If you have any trouble lighting the FlameDisk®, be sure the top of the FlameDisk® is not pressed into the fuel. If the top of the FlameDisk® is pressed into the fuel there may not be enough air. Use a tool to carefully lift up the top and create space for air.
  • Shelter FlameDisk® from rain, especially when lighting it.
  • FlameDisk® will perform best with all grill vents open and the grill lid off.
  • Be sure to first let the FlameDisk® and cooking grate warm up for 4 minutes before starting to grill.
